Hand Painted Holly Card with Watercolor Pencils Video Tutorial

Hello and welcome to my blog; today I am gong to share with you the card that I made last night during my Facebook Live.  This card is also for my 25 Days of Christmas Holiday Card Series 2019.  I created this card using our two sets of watercolor pencils and some watercolor paper.  Here's a look at the card I created.

You may think that creating your own watercolor painting is hard? Or that you have no talent to draw or paint.  I am here to tell you that you couldn't be any further from the truth.  Creating your own hand drawn and painted watercolor holly card is as simple as knowing what shapes to break your image down into and how much pressure to use on your pencils.  The viewer's eyes will read the image as you have intended it to be.  That is one of the reasons you can create images by hand look as you intended.  The biggest thing you have to remember as I mentioned above is breaking images you want to draw down into the basic shapes that comprise the image.  By breaking each berry and leaf down into different shapes you see helps to make the drawing process easier.
The berries on my card are basic circular shapes.  So by drawing them this way and coloring them in with both real red and cherry cobbler watercolor pencils allows the eye to read them as holly berries.  Our mind knows that holly leaves have spikes on them so they have a pointed end, by drawing them with this pointed triangular end our eyes read them as the actual holly leaf shape.  Drawing is all about putting what shapes you see down on the paper.  But, by adding the colors that our mind knows that these images are helps the viewers mind to read the drawn and painted images as holly leaves and berries.  By adding in the colors that make up the green hue of the holly leaves (blues and yellows) you are creating a move living green hue that will help the eye read as lights and shadows all depending on where you place these colors helping the eyes and mind to read each stroke of the pencil and aqua painter as the actual holly leaf.
Watercolor pencils are a great medium to achieve the look of not only watercolors but will allow you to break down the image you are trying to create without any hard lines of a graphite pencil.  Watercolor pencils are way more forgiving, once the pencil marks are activated with water the lead becomes pigment that will flow with the water on the paper.  Another tip with using watercolor pencils is the amount of pressure you place on the pencil to the paper.  The heavier you press on the pencil the more pigment you are putting down which means the more pigment you are placing on the paper.  Which also means the darker the color will appear.  If you want a lighter color chock back on the pencil so you have less pressure on it.  Then when you add your water you will have a lighter value of color, because you have less pigment that has been applied to the paper.
By putting all these little tips together you can create any image that you would like.  Painting and drawing is all about breaking things down to basic shapes, knowing how much pigment to place on the paper, what colors to add together to create different hues and values, and remembering that when something is laying on top of another there is always a shadow and highlight.  These little rules if you remember them will change your painting forever.

Fable Friends for #PCC333

Hello and welcome to my blog; today I am going to share with you my card for this week's Paper Craft Crew Challenge.  This weeks challenge is a two week challenge; so you have two weeks to play along with us.  For my card today I used one of my favorite stamp sets from the 2019 Stampin' Up! Occasions Catalog.  When it comes to cuteness there isn't another set in the publication that can match the fun story book charters in Fable Friends.  Here's a look at my card.

Here's the sketch that inspired my card.  You can click on the sketch image to see what all the other design team members came up with.

Tips & Tricks:

  • The Fable Friends stamp set is filled with cuteness for Easter and Spring.  This is a great stamp set for both adults and kids, because who can resist the cute animals in this set.  Plus the Peter Rabbit inspired bunny in this set was perfect for this card.  These animals just beg to be colored in your favorite media.

  • I stamped the bunny in a ink that could be used for watercoloring because I knew I was going to use my watercolor pencils.  I prefer to use my retired archival basic black ink pad for watercoloring technique.  And this also means when it comes to watercolor pencils.  You can totally use Stazon but you just have to let it dry completely.  This is the same process for the retired ink.  Once stamped I sat the image aside to dry.
  •   Next I cut down my card base (4 1/4 x 11 scored at 5 1/2) which by the way was created with Whisper White Thick Cardstock.  After that I picked a piece of designer series paper from the Springtime Impressions Paper Stack.  I pulled my colors from that one sheet of paper.  The designer series paper was cut to 4 x 5 1/4.  I added a mat in Shaded Spruce that was cut to 4 1/8 x 5 3/8.

  • Once the bunny was dry I started coloring with my watercolor pencils until I was happy with the layers of color.  Now it was time to use my blender pen to soften the watercolor pigment left by the pencils.
  • At this point I let it dry completely than used my new Rectangles Stitched Dies.  I also used the third largest die and cut out a mat for it using So Saffron Cardstock.  I added a little shaded spruce ribbon and a few of the gingham gala sequins.

I did pop up the bunny himself onto the mat with a few stampin' dimensionals to finish off the card.  Thanks for dropping by.  I hope that you take some time in the next two weeks to come up with a design to pay along with this challenge.  Also if you need any of the supplies that you have seen today you can pick them up in my online store by clicking the link above or by clicking on the item in the Shopping list below.

February Blogging Friends Blog Hop: CASE the Designer and Saleabration

Hello and welcome to this month's Blogging Friends Blog Hop!  This month we have a very special hop for you.  Not only are we all focusing on Saleabration products, but we have a very special guest hopper with us this month.  This month we have the very wonderful and talented Laura Borchert of Laura's Stamp Pad joining us.  I started watching Laura's YouTube Channel the year that I signed up (a little over 3 years ago) and loved her style and honest simple style.  Not to mention her love of flowers was a big draw since I have that same love.  Laura has been a demonstrator for about 14 years now and if you talked to her you would think that she had just started with her love and enthusiasm for the Stampin' Up!.  Her attitude is contagious and refreshing knowing that she has been a demonstrator for such a long time.  I got the opportunity to meet her in person in Orlando at OnStage in November.  And, I was super excited to talk to her a little while we stood in line to go into CenterStage.  We came very friendly and talked for awhile.  I was super excited to have her agree to hop with us this month.  During our conversation via Facebook after we got home from Orlando and I asked her if she would be interested in joining us we decided that she would hop with us in February and she already had a card for our theme and so we talked about her thoughts on adding to our theme this month and adding in the CASE the designer aspect.  And, she was super excited to do so and sent me a picture of her card right away.

If you don't know what CASE means; well it means COPY AND SHARE EVERYTHING OR COPY AND SELECTIVELY EDIT.  As card makers and designers we do this sometimes when we find a design that we like, or want to recreate.  CASEing is a great way to improve your own design skills.  Here's the card that Laura sent me as part of our inspiration for this month's Hop.

Laura gave us a fun card to CASE for today's hop.  Here's a look at my card based on her's.

Home to Roost, Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Paper, Rick Adkins, Saleabration, Stampin' Up!

I used the Home to Roost Saleabration Stamp Set for my card, along with a piece of the Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Paper.  Both of which are Saleabration items and can be earned with each $50.00 purchase in my online store.  I replaced the embossed background from Laura's card with the Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Paper.  This allowed me to keep the texture but change it a little.  I then stamped the rooster from the Home to Roost Stamp Set on a piece of Whisper White Cardstock with Stazon ink and used my watercolor pencils to color it in.  I then cut it out with one of the stitched circles from the Stitched Shapes Framelits.  After die cutting the image I stamped the grassy image on each side of the circle in Soft Sea Foam classic ink.

I added a large scalloped circle in Soft Sea Foam behind the rooster image.  I then added a piece of the Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Paper cut at 5 1/4 x 4 to a piece of Soft Sea Foam cardstock (4 1/8 x 5 3/8).  I attached this piece to the card base which is in Cajun Craze (4 1/4 x 11 scored at 5 1/2).  Behind the rooster I added a fish tail banner in Calypso Coral.  Here's a look at the colors that I used for my card today.

This is one of those unexpected color combinations that you probably wouldn't think of right off the bat, but works very well together.  Both the Calypso Coral and Cajun Craze are in the red family on the color wheel and since Green is the complement of Reds it works wonderfully when paired together.

I hope that you have liked my card today, and that you have a fun hopping along with us for this month's hop.  You will find a full list of the supplies that I used for my card today below the blog roll.  If you view this post on my Wordpress site and not on my new blog the blog roll will be up shortly on it.
